John Paul II Oil Painting

Karol Józef Wojtyła, known as John Paul II since his election to the papacy in October 1978, was born in Wadowice, a small town 50 kms. from Krakow, on May 18, 1920. He was the youngest of three children born to Karol Wojtyła and Emilia Kaczorowska. His mother died in 1929. His older brother Edmund (a physician) died in 1932 and his father (an army non-commissioned officer) in 1941. His sister Olga died before he was born.

John Paul II’s doctrinal legacy is one of the richest in the history of the Church. He tirelessly guarded the deposit of faith and the Church’s tradition of error, promoting authentic theological, moral and spiritual doctrine.
